Is the idea of having a big wedding celebration with all the bells and whistles not quite your thing? Or maybe you've always wanted to get married overseas but can’t commit to the whole destination wedding fuss. No matter how you phrase it, you'll know if eloping if the best option for you! Here's our guide on how to have the perfect, low-key elopement.
PREPARE FAMILY AND FRIENDS...
The first thing to do once you've decided to elope is let your family and friends know! Odds are, they have been waiting a while for a wedding so let them know of your plans to elope early on, like at your engagement party. Don't be afraid of what they'll think or say about your elopement because ultimately, it's only for you and your partner to decide and your family should be supportive of your decision.
CHECK THE FINE PRINT...
Before you plan to go anywhere, check the legal system that's in place for the country you want to elope in. Chances are there won't be any dramas, however, some countries may not legally recognise the marriage without witnesses and licenses. Make sure you do your research so you can meet all the legal requirements for your elopement on the big day!
HIRE A LOCAL...
Whether you’re looking for a planner, photographer, or videographer, try to find someone that is local to where you are eloping. Not only will they be able to find the best packages for you, but local photographers also know the lighting and landscape better than anyone else. This means they will help you nail the perfect wedding photoshoot! Also, if you’re looking to get your hair and makeup done, a bouquet for the day, or some food and drink to celebrate after, your local wedding planner will know exactly who to call!
THE NITTY GRITTY...
Will you have a dress? Will it be white? Will it be short? Will you have rings? These are the questions you need to ask to make sure you and your fiancé are on the same page when the big day arrives. Eloping isn’t a traditional idea, so you may or may not want to incorporate traditional elements into the ceremony. It's completely up to you!
DON'T DOWNPLAY IT...
Even though your family and friends may be missing out on the big day, it is still a BIG day for you and your partner. Just because you’ve decided to elope, doesn’t make the commitment is any less special. Be sure to enjoy every moment with each other and relish in that blissful wedding magic.
CELEBRATE YOUR MARRIAGE...
Once you’ve been legally married, mark the occasion! Although family and friends may not be close by, go and celebrate with each other. After all, you’ve just legally wed! Why not celebrate the beginning of your lives together with a night out on the town or with an uber romantic dinner by candlelight.
SEND A MARRIAGE ANNOUNCEMENT...
You’ve just married the love of your life...now’s the time to announce the elopement to your family and friends! Post on social media, create a video of the day, or wait to make a physical card to send to your nearest and dearest to mark your new relationship status. Whatever your style is, it's time to celebrate your marriage with the people you love!
