So you've been asked to be a maid of honour for one of your best gal pals. Now along with many of your duties, you have to nail your wedding speech. Here are our top tips to make sure you create a memorable and engaging maid of honour speech.
Make It Unique...
Try to avoid cliches when writing your speech. Don't use generic phrases like 'great friend' or 'nice'. Use stories to example her personality, to allow the audience to better understand her best characteristics and qualities. If you're a little stuck, just really think about your friendship and what you treasure most about her!
Make it about the couple...
Whilst you should initially focus on the bride/ your best friend, you should remember to bring the focus back to the happy couple and talk about their union. If you can, try and add some happy couple stories to show how they are together. Chances are you heard about your bestie's partner after the first date, so you should have some great stories about their relationship!
Don't Mention the Exes...
Focus on the new couple. At no point is it acceptable to mention the "ex". Past dating stories are best to be kept to girls nights rather than being shared in front of family and friends. You want to focus on the couple's future together and not their past apart.
No inside jokes, involve the room...
Remember that everyone wants to relate to your speech. Make sure you make this speech about the bride and not about you. Introduce yourself so they know your relation to the couple and then return to focusing on their love. Your friendship is beautiful but make sure you speak to the relatable aspect of the bride and the couple... it's all about them.
Be Short And Sweet...
Make your stories short and punchy. There's nothing worse than a speech that goes on and on. Don't let people lose interest and miss your jokes, so make sure you work with the crowd. Make your speech enjoyable for all and mention the best bits about the bride and groom.
Wish Them Well For The Future...
When writing your speech make sure you add well wishes for their future together... for a long and happy marriage together.
Practice, Practice, Practice...
Practice makes perfect. Make sure you practice plenty of times, whether that be in front of people or in front of the mirror. It is important to work on timing and delivery so you can engage with your audience.
