Super Stylist Sunday: Arthouse Studio

Modern Wedding Posted: March 4, 2018

Arthouse Studio

Arthouse Studio are a Melbourne based event design and styling company specialising in kick-ass events.

The handpicked team at Arthouse Studio love pushing the boundaries of creativity and draw inspirations from their experience in the USA, Italy and Australia to bring you a one of a kind experience.

Modern Wedding: Tell us a little bit about yourself

Lisette: Lisette Brunckhorst, Founder of Arthouse Studio. Things I love; Flowers, the beach, art deco design, wineries, my dog Hugo, my husband (should add that one in).

Modern Wedding: How did you get started as a stylist?

Lisette: I studied Interior Design back in Miami, FL. When I moved to Australia 7 years ago I began working in Visual Merchandising and prop styling. I transitioned into event styling because I wanted to combine my design and space planning experience with the fast paced environment of the event industry.

Modern Wedding: What colours and colour palette combinations do you love for next 12 months?

Lisette: With the 2018 colour of the year being ‘ultra violet’, I’m expecting to see some bolder and moodier colour palettes. Last season we saw a lot of lush greenery, soft hues, and lots of texture. I expect those elements to continue, but colour palettes to include more shades of purple; lilac, plum. Lavender, etc.

Modern Wedding: What are your favourite new styling trends for 2018/19?

Lisette:I love the use of darker tones and black accents. From what I am seeing, it’s all about colour and drama in 2018!

Wild and vibrant floral arrangements with rich purple hues. Hanging floral/greenery installations will continue to be popular in design. They are a great way to create more depth and drama, whilst giving brides the option of freeing up the tables for other elements.

I am loving the introduction of transparent elements in design. From architectural details in venues like floor to ceiling windows or glass roofs, to lucite chairs, or printed clear Perspex seating charts. These elements create a very sleek modern look.

Modern Wedding: What are your five favourite styling elements to work with right now and why?

Lisette: Top 3 would easily be; Flowers, linens and chairs!

Flowers can really elevate a space. They can create drama, or make a space feel more intimate or playful; they can really alter the mood of a space.

Linens are a great way to add texture and depth to a design. Organic linen table cloths layered together create a soft and textural element. In 2018, we may see more lazer cut linens to really add another element of depth and texture to your tablescape.

Chairs, I feel, are the real unsung heroes of an event. The right chair can really elevate the style and feel of the event. It is also a great way to add another textural element to the design, whether it be lucite, metal, velvet upholster, etc.

In addition to there, I love working with natural elements like wood and stone and metals like copper. I feel adding organic elements in really can ‘ground’ a design.

Modern Wedding: What are your top 3 tips for brides wanting to create unique wedding style?

Lisette: Try not to get caught up in all the style trends. While there are great style trends out there, they really should be a source of inspiration for brides, they shouldn’t dictate how a bride should style her wedding.

Another tip; enlist help. Planning this kind of event can be time consuming and overwhelming. There is a lot of inspiration out there! Enlisting the help of someone like a stylist or even friend to help you hone in on a style/theme.

Think outside the box- not all weddings have to follow the same format. If a formal sit-down reception doesn’t feel comfortable to you, don’t do it!

Your style should reflect you as a couple.

Modern Wedding: If you were designing your own wedding, how would you style it?

Lisette: I keep telling my husband that I could get married over and over again! (Something tells me he may not share the same idea!)

The problem (and joy!) of being a Stylist is that we constantly immerse ourselves in all the different style trends and inspiration! You just want an excuse to use them all!

If I were to do it all over again, I would have an outdoor wedding by the coast. The décor would be very stripped back and organic, with a neutral colour palette reflected in a mix of natural linens and place settings. I like to create interest with a mixture of textures and lighting more than colour and there would be pampas grass and LOTS of lush greenery! That is a must! With a touch of fresh lavender to pay homage to the colour of the year 😉

I would opt for more relaxed form of catering like grazing tables or ‘family style’ to offer a more informal and interactive feel for the guests. I love quirky elements like vintage cart bars. They add a real playful feel.

And a live band. I love the atmosphere live music creates at an event.
