Summerproof Your Wedding Hair & Makeup With These Tips

Modern Wedding Posted: February 8, 2019

The sun on your skin, long days and balmy nights. A summer wedding can be pure bliss, but can also prove to be fresh hair & makeup's arch nemesis.  To ensure you are radiant all day and night long, summer proof your wedding hair and makeup with these handy tips.

Rachel & Jacob's wedding - see it here

Hair...

Choose a summer friendly style...

The heat can wreak havoc on any bridal do, so it's important to be mindful of the humidity and the season of your big day when choosing your hairstyle. If you particularly struggle with the heat, having your hair up will keep it away from your face and neck. Not only will this style keep you cool, but a half up, half down or a high ponytail or bun is on trend for this season. Up the ante on your bridal style with some earrings and accessories and stress less about touch ups throughout the day.

Make it humidity proof...

Humidity is the number one enemy of any good hair day, so it's important to take the necessary precautions to minimise frizz and limp locks. If you find that you suffer from the frizz, opt for an anti-frizz products like a leave in conditioner or smoothing serum to keep those strands at bay. Just remember to use minimal product as it could lead to limp and greasy hair.

If you aren't a fan of using product, putting your hair in braids prior to styling will ensure they are humidity proof for the day.  Another option is styling with tighter curls, which will make it more difficult for them to fall once they have been in contact with the heat.

Embrace your natural hair...

This season, hair and makeup is fresh, not fake. Embracing the hair you were blessed with is a simple way to beat the heat and keep your locks in check all night. Humid weather makes for wavier and more voluptuous locks, so use a styling product to define natural hair. For a straight style, seek out a flat iron paired with a serum or leave-in conditioner.

Understand your hair type...

You know your hair, so you know how it will react to heat and humidity. Go with your gut on this one and style it to suit your needs.

Makeup...

Cater to your skin type...

Above anything else, it is important to recognise your skin's needs. Choosing what products to use for your big day is vital, especially when heat and sweat is thrown into the mix. If you are prone to oily skin, keep layers of makeup minimal. For those with dry skin reach for a hydrating primer that promises longevity without drying the skin out.

Make it melt proof...

Hot days = sweat, which is generally doesn't agree with a beautifully made up face. Step one to maintaining your look is choosing smudge proof makeup that can stand up against moisture. The second is to use powder based makeups over creams and liquids if possible. Foundation should be flawless and light, and for summer celebrations we are loving pearl, peach and bronze tones. Airbrushed makeup or powders will ensure a picture perfect bridal beauty all day long. Investing in a good primer and setting spray will also make a huge difference.

Keep an emergency kit handy...

If you don't have a makeup artist on call all day, an emergency kit full of makeup essentials is a priority. Paper towel, blotting paper, facial mist and deodorant are a good place to start. Add some luxuries like perfume into the mix for a bridesmaids gift your bride tribe will love.
