With 2020, the next decade, looming around the corner, most of us will be preparing our lists of endless resolutions that we struggle to keep. Most of the time, our resolutions don't stick because they're too broad or not measurable. If you’re having a hard time sticking to your resolutions or having difficulty actually defining what you want, we’ve got some new year resolutions and tips you can use to make sure you start off the new roaring 20s the right way!
MORE MOVEMENT...
If you’re a stickler for putting ‘lose weight’ or ‘get fit’ as your resolutions, then consider trying alternative forms of exercise, such as dancing. Not only is it a fun way to exercise, you can get your friends involved and socialise as well! Head to your local gym, try out Zumba classes, or try your local dance school offering beginner classes for adults. You’ll be fit in no time without the dread of getting to the gym. This New Year, think of fun and different ways to reach your fitness goals, that don't make you groan at the idea.
MORE SELF CARE...
Focus on yourself this New Year. How are you feeling? In 2020, make time to check in with yourself. These days we are so busy with our work and others, we often make ourselves less of a priority. Take time for yourself in 2020. Pamper yourself with skincare, a bubble bath, your favourite TV show, hobbies, and books. Take some classes and pick up a new skill to broaden your knowledge. If 2020 is the year of your big day, try to slow down and really check in with your emotions. Planning can be a stressful time for many brides and grooms. Make sure you take care of yourself so you can be glowing on your wedding day!
MORE SAVINGS...
If you tend to repeat the resolution of ‘save more, spend less’, you may have trouble sticking to it. If this is you, make sure this year, you physically write down a number you want your bank account to reach. Then, break that number down into small transfers you can put aside into your savings, and then DO NOT TOUCH! If you have a particular savings goal or destination in mind, especially if it's for your wedding or honeymoon, make sure to follow the budget so you can hit your savings targets!
MORE MINDFULNESS...
Ooommm. We often think of practicing mindfulness as meditating and sitting in boring silence. But mindfulness doesn’t have to be boring. You just need to be present. Try some yoga classes to get your head out of your body. Think about what you're experiencing when eating food, look at your surroundings on your walk to work. These small moments of mindfulness can help make your day more enjoyable, leading to a happier year ahead. Focus on the positive and be thankful for what you do have and what you're capable of.
MORE LOVE...
We all make jokes about cutting toxic people out of our lives, but sometimes we struggle to recognise who truly holds our best interests at heart. Rather than emphasising cutting out toxicity, focus on the love and support of those around you that make time for you and make you feel special. 2020 is all about giving and receiving love. If you're planning a wedding for 2020, make sure to fill the guest list with genuine people you love. Don't worry about how big or small the day is, as long as you're enjoying yourself, the day, and the company. Focus on the positive rather than the negative.
LESS BAD HABITS...
If you have a bad habit you want to get rid of e.g. smoking, spending, or your phone, you may find it easier to set a SMART goal. This will break the resolution down into steps to help you actually achieve it. Going cold turkey almost never works, so break it down to get out of the habit. For example, from 6 hours on social media to 5, to 4, etc. as the months of the year go by.
LESS CONSUMING...
Minimalism is trending in a big culture shift. Although many of us might not be able to part with our favourite pair of party heels, shopping less, or more ethically is a win-win for everyone. In 2020, focus on reducing consumption of takeaway foods, fashion, and knick-knacks. After all, how many things in your closet do you actually wear? When you do need to consume, try shopping locally and ethically. Not only will this also help the environment, but it’ll also make you feel better about your purchases.
LESS STRESS...
Just as your making time for mindfulness, let the stress leave your life. While you may find yourself in stressful situations and rough times, being mindful and having coping mechanisms through exercise or hobbies will always relieve the stress and make you feel better overall. Without sounding like a broken record, exercise releases endorphins, which alleviate stress and pain. So, if you're ever feeling down or overwhelmed, get moving and you'll find yourself feeling better instantly.
LESS SCREEN TIME...
Make more time for real-life interactions next year. Take time to go out and socialise with friends at the local bar, take your dog for a walk or get your dates outdoors and enjoy what nature has to offer. Give your eyes a break from the harsh blue light of technology, and substitute it for the natural blue light of the great outdoors. We’re sure your Netflix account will have no hard feelings.
LESS MESS...
Now is the ending and beginning of a new decade. It’s time to organise. If you’re organised and clean in your physical world, such as your bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen, you’re far more likely to have a clear head. Make your space pleasant to be in, and organise your life as well. Get yourself a pretty diary or DIY your own wall calendar so significant dates and important meetings aren’t scattered around your brain. This is a must for those planning a wedding in 2020, to plan the lead up of appointments!
