Your wedding is an incredibly special day, but it can also come with a lot of pressure. The best thing you can do for yourself is to try and minimise that wedding stress wherever possible, especially on the actual day! This is where hair prep comes in. Many brides-to-be will know that there are days when your hair just ‘works’ and days when it doesn’t. Well don't worry, because we are here to help! We consulted hair guru Frankie Flanagan, who just happens to be the editorial director at Adilla Colab, to find out everything you need to know about getting your hair wedding day ready.
A Touch of Light...
You may notice TV presenters and actors always have highlighted hair, whether they be blonde or brunette. This is because having a variation in your hair really brings it to life on camera. Breaking your hair up with highlights is absolutely recommended, as it reads a lot better on camera and in those photos that you will be keeping forever! Be sure to choose a colour that is close to what you usually wear. If you are considering changing your unique and vibrant hair colour to something you consider 'normal' for the big day, think again! That colour is part of what makes you special. So keep it that way!
Extend It...
When considering your bridal look, extensions are essential for so many reasons!
- An immense amount of density is needed for your hair to look good from every angle and extensions can provide this!
- Extensions are amazing because they HOLD! They are especially desired for brides having destination weddings because no matter what, with a good brush they still look great the next day! Natural hair can drop and lose its texture and style. So if your hair is not naturally curly, consider extensions.
- If you are using clip-in extensions, then they can be prepped the day before. This cuts down time spent on glam in the morning. Ponytail styles only take about 20 minutes!
- You can have them put in before the hen's party, then you have them for the hens, wedding, recovery and honeymoon! They can also be kept and used for other occasions...how good is that!
- You can use extensions to lighten your hair without damaging your natural locks. If you want a few highlights, you can add lighter styles instead of colouring your hair. No bleach, no damage! And no need for extra treatments before the big day.
- You don't have to spend years growing out your hair! Such a bonus for the impatient bride!
- They will help add density, making it so much easier to style that amazing up-do you were after!
Layers and Layers...
You might want to consider something called ‘wedding layers’. A section is taken all around the hairline, and cut in a feathered motion, about 4 inches long or shorter. If you go to the gym regularly, this pretty much sounds like a nightmare! But the idea is that there are pieces that hang out of the hairstyle but without being too long and looking tacky. It creates softness in the style and a ‘wispy’ textured look for your romantic wedding!
The Prep...
For your hair to be predictable, and able to be properly styled, it’s best to throw out the supermarket shampoo and see a decent hairdresser. You might be amazed at how cost-effective it is to have great shampoo and conditioner and see a high-end hairdresser a few times a year. Start this prep as soon as you get engaged (if not before). What you want to avoid is using a terrible shampoo and conditioner that damages the hair, or see hairdressers that may do lasting damage that ultimately needs to be fixed by an expensive hairdresser.
Try Before You Buy...
Always make sure you have a trial with your hairdresser and wash your hair the day before. Whatever you test out during the trial, make sure it is the same as what you will do on the day! Trials will generally be done as close to the wedding as possible as your stylist may already have you on a regime of products, colours and extensions beforehand. There is also no harm in having more than one styling trial! Testing out the look earlier on means that you will be able to see what works for you and factor this into your final bridal look.
Be Yourself...
Whatever you choose to do, make sure it's close to what you love wearing. If you never ever wear your hair up, think about wearing it down, otherwise, you might freak out and feel uncomfortable on the day – and at the end of it, it all comes down to comfort and what makes you, you!
Last But Not Least...
Don't worry, we haven't forgotten about the grooms! After all, they deserve the same pampering and prep as the brides. Adilla offers a groom's wedding package so the fellas can get styled on the day. This package includes an initial haircut a few days before the wedding, as this gives the style some time to settle. The crew can then head into the barbershop on the big day for some styling, razor shaves and haircuts. Of course this is accompanied by breakfast, coffee, styling products to take home and a whiskey to celebrate the day!
Overall, the less you have to worry about on the big day, the better. Prepping your hair properly and using the right people to care for it will have you looking like you should be on the front of a Modern Wedding magazine! Contact the team at Adilla Collab to start your hair pampering now.
