In just three weeks the next edition of Modern Wedding DIY goes on sale and to celebrate Modern Wedding DIY editor Gail MacDiarmid will be sharing simple DIY wedding projects in the lead up. Stay tuned to the blog every Thursday as we swing into DIY training!
The new issue of Modern Wedding DIY hits the news stands on Monday 4th November. Again it is packed full of gorgeous, creative projects that will keep you busy for another year. When researching and compiling ideas for each issue, I am always amazed at how many different ways one can add a personal touch to one's wedding. Because there are so many potential wedding applications for DIY, I sometimes find it difficult to select which projects are to be featured in each issue. Sadly, not all the projects make it into the magazine. For example, our cake topper story was one that could have filled many more pages. This small but important item is very DIY doable and can be made even by those with limited craft skills. I hope you enjoy the featured final selection. Each one requires a moderate level of skill and will top off your wedding cake beautifully. So you do not miss out on any of the projects, over the next few weeks we will show you the cake toppers that did not make the magazine. Here we feature two heart cake-toppers that can also be used to decorate cup cakes and desserts.
MINI HEART GARLAND
You will need:
Glitter card stock
Fine string
Sticky dots
Bamboo skewers
How to create:
- Cut six hearts from the glitter card.
- Place sticky dots on the back of the three hearts. Position them equally apart on a length of string.
- Attach the other three hearts to the back of the first three hearts.
- Tie the ends of the string to the bamboo skewers and insert into the top of the cake.
TIP: When drawing the hearts remember to keep them in proportion to the size of the cake.
A HEART CLUSTER
You will need:
30cm cotton fabric
Fusible webbing
Bamboo skewers
Craft glue
How to create:
- Make a heart template in three different sizes - small medium and large.
- Cut out two squares of fabric for each heart, therefore, if you are making three hearts you should have six squares. Press fusible webbing to the back of three squares of fabric according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Trace the heart templates onto the back of each piece of fabric and cut out.
- Using craft glue, stick a skewer to the wrong side of the hearts that have no fusible webbing on them.
- Once the glue is dry, place the matching hearts on top of one another and fuse together with a warm iron.
TIP: To stop the hearts from flopping over (this mainly happens to the bigger hearts) stiffen them with spray-on starch after they have been made.
