Ask the wedding doctor
- I can't decide on a MOH... what is there role exactly? Should I just have 4 bridesmaids?
-
Hi, the choice is really yours, there are no rules against having four bridesmaids and no head bridesmaid, but here are the facts so you can make the right choice.
The first thing you need to know is that you either have a Matron of Honour OR a Chief bridesmaid, depending on whether the person you choose is married or not. If you choose a married friend to be your head bridesmaid then they will be called your Matron of Honour, but if the person you choose is not married, she will be your Chief bridesmaid.
The role of Matron of Honour is usually filled by your best friend, sister or close relative, she is your answer to the best man. However as I’m sure you know, you will do a lot more organising than the groom and so the Matron of Honour will also run more errands and generally help out more than the best man.
The Matron of Honour or Chief Bridesmaids duties include:
o Looking after the bridesmaids, flower girl and pageboys
o Help with the invitations
o Help you shop
o Help decide on the colour and style of bridesmaids dresses
o Run general errands
o Organise the hen’s night or weekend, bridal shower and any other pre-wedding celebrations, other than the engagement party.
On the day
o Help you get into your dress and often get hair and makeup done with you and the rest of the bridesmaids
o Lead the procession down the aisle
o Sign the marriage certificate
o Make a speech (optional)
o Dance with the best man
o Ensure that the remaining cake is packed up and taken to your house
o Help transport gifts from the reception to the your home
Choose a close friend or family member who you know will be able to fulfil this role and will be happy doing so. If you don’t have any close girlfriends or sisters you could ask to do the job, some bride’s decide to ask their best male friend… why not have a Chief Male-maid?
