Ask the wedding doctor

  • I went Dress shopping with one of my bridesmaid's and i shose a taffeta strapless dress which i fell in love with!! However... I am the worst decision maker in that i either procrastinate or make a quick deciion and then start second guessing myself!!! I'm made the mistake of calling the boutique where i had bought the dress from and asking what exactly my dress was made of... She said polyester taffeta!! I was shattered, being so naive about fabrics hearing the words polyester broke my heart. Is Polyester taffeta tacky? or is it commone for Wedding dresses? I'm too embarressed to ask anyone else and i want to knwo whther i made the right descions?? I love the dress and guess i'm not too bothered by the fabric however i don't want to be standing up there on the day with people saying how awfully tacky the fabric is...... I guess my question is Is taffeta still considered nice and can you tell between silk taffeta and blend taffeta fabrics?? and also will i be terribly hot? We're having an early March wedding next year.
  • The word polyester is nothing to be scared of when it comes to wedding gowns. In fact, polyester will help your gown to look the best it possibly can. Taffeta made of natural fibres such as silk, cotton or wool is not only pricey (costing anything from $3,000 – $5,000) but will also crush very easily. Just take a look a Princess Diana’s gown when she married Prince Charles – her gown was of silk taffeta.
Most gowns these days do have some element of polyester in them. This has become such a sophisticated fabric, that it will fit you better, will wear better, won’t crush and will look better than silk on the day. So all in all, a great choice for your dream wedding gown.
Many thanks to Monique from Peter Trends Bridal for her expertise on these fabrics.
