Ask the wedding doctor

  • I read somewhere you have to legally say " I (name) take you (name) to be my lawfully wedded husband ...". Is this accurate? Or can u use the response "I do" to the celebrants questions?
  • The answer to your question depends on the type of wedding ceremony you will be having.
    If you are getting married by a minister of religion, your service can take any form as long as it is recognised as sufficient by the religious body or organisation of which they are a minister.
    However, if you are getting married by an authorised civil celebrant, it is sufficient for you and your hubby to say to each other,
    “I call upon the persons here present to witness that I, A.B, take thee, C.D., to be my lawful wedded wife/ husband)”;
    or words to that effect.
    This is written into the Marriage Act 1961for the Commonwealth of Australia.

    If you are still unsure it’s best to check with the person you have chosen to marry you, as they will know exactly what is required to make your marriage legal.
