Ask the wedding doctor
- is it really taboo to use diamonds from and old engagement ring to make your new one to wear for the rest of your life ?

The answer to your question really depends on where the engagement ring came from.
If you are re-using a relative's engagement ring (like your grandmother's or your fiancés grandmother's) then it is perfectly fine to wear it as is, or modify it to suit your own taste. It is quite common for couples to re-use their relative's rings - not only will you save some money, but the ring carries great sentimental value as well. If you're lucky enough to inherit both your grandmother's rings you can have them melted together and create a whole new ring that combines the two families.
If you are talking about recycling an engagement ring from a past relationship, you should definitely move on and start afresh. There is no need to have a constant reminder of someone else on your finger. Especially seeing as the engagement ring is supposed to be all about you and your partner... only.
With the old ring - why not sell it to a jeweller or on ebay and use the money to help purchase your new ring?Another option is to melt the ring down and create some earrings or other piece of jewellery so you can still enjoy the stones without them being part of an old engagement ring.
