- Our ceremony and reception are at the same venue... is it rude to ask people to buy their own drinks at the bar whilst we are getting photos? We will be providing dinner drinks and dessert once we return from photos.

Unfortunately the harsh but correct answer to this question is yes.
Etiquette rules that once you arrive at the reception venue, including if you arrive earlier than the reception due to the ceremony being located at the same place, the food and drinks are provided.
Most weddings have a time before the wedding where cocktail drinks and nibbles are served while guests wait for the bride and groom. If you don't want to miss out on too much of this pre-dinner celebration, get your photos taken around the same site so you cut out the travel time and you can get back to your guests quickly.
