It is usually expected that the bridesmaids buy their own attire including shoes. However it is important not to pick an expensive dress that they won't be able to afford or will be paying off for years to come. The best thing to do is have an open conversation about the bridesmaid dresses with your chosen maids first and ask them what their expectations are and all descide on an estimated cost so you are all on the same page.
Ask them to come shopping with you and help choose the dresses they will be wearing - that way they'll be there to pay for them and you won't be awkwardly chasing up money... it's a stress you don't need.
If they get to choose a dress they love and will probably wear again, they won't be too upset about paying for it themselves.
