Wedding cake customs

Wedding cakes have made an appearance as far back in time as the ancient Greeks and Romans. The tiered wedding cake as we know it evolved during the reign of King Charles II and was a mixture of French excess and British ceremony. The traditional white icing symbolised purity and also told everyone how much money you had. The whiter the icing, the more expensive the ingredients!
Today, cake customs have changed slightly.
We still have the age-old tradition of the cutting of the cake. The groom places his right hand over the brides; they both hold the knife and cut into their first dessert as husband and wife.
This has become one of the most important photo opportunities of the reception, some even going as far a to have a fake cutting of the cake while the photographer is still at your reception.
Making your wedding cake the centerpiece of your reception has become another important custom. Your cake designer will have placed your cake on a beautiful platter and your reception venue may have organised a table, in a prominent position, on which to place your cake. Make sure you add to this ceremony by ensuring your table is properly decorated. A dowdy-looking table will upstage a beautiful cake and platter. Why not drape some lovely fabric over it or scatter it with rose petals?
If you’re really gong to stick to tradition and custom then make sure the top tier of your cake is fruitcake. This ensures that you can save and freeze it until the next auspicious date in your lives. This may be the birth of your first child or your first anniversary. Let the cake defrost and if necessary have it re-iced. We have to admit this may not be about the taste sensation, but it will bring back some fantastic memories and help you create some new ones.
