Having children at your festivities is ultimately your choice. If you decide to include children you need to plan some activities, especially for the little ones to keep them amused throughout the celebrations. Consider these playful pinwheels. Not only are they a perfect table decoration, gift or party favour, these brightly coloured poinsettia pinwheels will delight your little guests with hours of fun.
Materials
- 1 sheet of 160gsm red cardboard
- craft hole puncher
- 1 square of yellow felt
- 1 Birch large eyelet kit
- 50mm wide clear plastic tubing (purchased from hardware store)
- 1packet 40mm x 2.8mm clouts/nails (purchased from hardware store)
- one wooden piece of dowel 9mm x 45cm
- buttons or beads
- craft glue
- hammer and drill
How to create
- Find Pointsettia template below.
- Trace six petal templates (this will make one pinwheel) onto cardboard and cut out.
- Punch holes in the petals where indicated.
- Trace and cut yellow flower centres from felt or cardboard.
- To form the flower, stack six petals on top of each other lining up holes A and B and hold together by passing an eyelet through hole A. Bend petals over and fix to the eyelet via hole B (see image 1). Arrange petal as best you can before placing washer on top of eyelet and securing with hammer and punch. Don’t worry if you can’t get all the petals exactly in place before setting your eyelet - you can gently arrange them afterwards.
- Cut pieces of clear plastic tubing into 2½ cm lengths.
- Cut a 46cm length of dowel and drill a hole that is a little smaller than the clout about 3cm from one end. This hole is to stop dowel splitting when you hammer the clout in place.
- Assemble the pinwheel by first sliding the paper flower onto the clout through the eyelet then slide the 2½ cm plastic tubing onto the clout. Gently hammer clout into the dowel leaving enough space between the tubing and dowel for the pinwheel to spin freely (see image 2).
- Glue yellow flower centres onto the head of the clout and finish off with a button or bead in the centre.
