Wildfire Publishing DIY flower pomander
A hanging sphere of flowers is a simple and pleasing shape that can be created with almost any flower and a delightful idea that can dress up any occasion. Pomanders are the perfect size for your flower girl’s small hands or can be used to adorn the bridal parties’ chairs.
Materials
- 12cm diameter oasis sphere wrapped in flexible netting
- (available from florists or florist sundry suppliers. If unable to purchase a sphere with the netting already on it, use the netting bag from your bag of fruit or vegetables)
- 1m satin ribbon
- flowers and secateurs
How to create
- Place your oasis sphere in water for approximately two minutes. The water is absorbed quickly so don’t leave it any longer otherwise the sphere will become too heavy.
- If you need to wrap the netting around sphere do it now by securing tightly at both ends.
- Fold your ribbon in half and tie to the flexible netting. If possible hang oasis sphere over a sink or table to create a hands-free workstation. This will prevent flowers from getting bruised.
- Clip flower stems to about 2cm in length. To help organise the arrangement, start from a central point and mark out a line of flowers either horizontally or vertically around the sphere pushing the flowers in as far as they will go. This will help with even placement of the flowers.
Use a tooth pick to make holes in sphere before inserting flower if the stems are soft. - Pomanders can be made the day before the wedding and kept in the refrigerator overnight.
- Transport to the wedding in tissue-lined boxes.
