Bunting Flags

Liven up your outdoor dining area with this delightful welcoming sign. Bunting can be made from leftover scraps of material or paper – a small amount goes a long way when you cut carefully. Choose any type of material and vary the size to suit the occasion.

What you will need:
50cm pretty cotton fabric
50cm calico (backing)
50cm Vliesofix
Baking paper
Sticky-backed black felt
4 m pom pom trim
3 m cotton tape
Craft glue
Sewing equipment

  1. Download bunting template
  2. Draw the bunting shape onto the paper side of the Vliesofix and cut out leaving at least a 1cm border around the shape.
  3. Place a piece of baking paper on an ironing board to protect it from getting excess glue on it.
  4. Place the cotton fabric face down on the baking paper followed by the Vliesofix with the paper side on top.  Iron to fuse the layers together.
  5. Leave to cool before cutting out the shape accurately and peel off the backing paper. Place the sticky-coated side onto the wrong side of the calico fabric and press again to fuse.
  6. Cut out the bunting flag accurately.
  7. Draw your letters in reverse on to the felt-backed paper so that they are the right way round when stuck on.  Cut out and stick in position.
  8. Attach the pom pom braid along two sides with craft glue.
  9. Once the bunting flags are completed, sew them at 2cm intervals to cotton tape leaving at least 40cm of free tape at each end for hanging.

Note: The reason for backing your bunting with calico is to make it firmer and to stop the light shining through. If you don’t want this extra layer of thickness there is no need to use the Vliesofix.
